328 – Genesis 15 – What does YHWH say about it?

We’ve been working our way through the book of Psalms, but we need to take a momentary detour through Genesis chapter fifteen. I have deliberately not addressed current events in my devotional posts instead focusing strictly on the truths of the Bible. It’s always been my hope and belief that as people learn Biblical truth they will be equipped to make necessary adjustments in their own lives (application). There is however so much confusion about the current war in Israel I would feel derelict in my writing if we didn’t consult the word of God for clarity. I cannot do an exhaustive study on the subject, but I want to at least make you aware that YHWH’s word has much to say about the current “dispute” in Israel.

Consider the following:

There is much confusion and disagreement today as to whether the Jews have a claim to the land they now possess, and some they do not currently possess. The Muslims claim that they have the right to the land since they are sons of Abraham through his son Ishmael. The following Biblical texts shown below are intended to show to whom God had given the land. (The sections made bold or underlined are done to identify the specific portions of relevant Scripture that address the subject.) Covenants: God’s Promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc. « Word & Work Online (wordandwork.org)

A quick perusal of a map of the Middle East reveals how small is the country of Israel. In comparison to the rest of the region, it makes up about 1 percent of the geography and has only 2 percent of the population. It is tiny! What light can the Bible shed on this discussion?

If turn to the book of Genesis (meaning beginnings) and start with the story of Abraham you will learn that YHWH called him out of a pagan people group and gave a land region to him and his descendants.

Genesis 12:1 (NKJV)

12:1       Now [YHWH] had said to Abram:

    “Get out of your country,

    From your family

    And from your father’s house,

To a land that I will show you.

Verse four of chapter twelve tells us Abraham obeyed and “departed as [YHWH] had spoken to him”. If you drop down to verse seven you’ll see YHWH again brings up land that He will give Abraham and his progeny. Abraham has to take up arms to retrieve his nephew Lot, which is referenced in the first part of chapter fifteen as, “After these things…”.

Genesis 15:1 (NKJV)

15:1       After these things the word of [YHWH] came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

Dropping down to verse seven we again see YHWH declaring to Abraham that He will give him “this land”. Abraham responds in verse eight by asking essentially, “How can I know for sure?”

What follows is the establishment of a covenant between YHWH and Abraham. Covenants in Abraham’s time and culture were always between two or more parties and each had responsibilities to keep the covenant. Both a blessing for keeping the covenant and a curse for breaking it were the foundation for this unbreakable agreement. If you read to the end of the chapter you will discover YHWH put Abraham to sleep meaning he had no responsibility in this covenant. In other words, this was an unconditional promise YHWH made to Abraham and His descendants. It was not conditioned upon anything the other party did or did not do.

In verse eighteen YHWH declares, “…I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates…”. It is important to note that the River Euphrates is in modern-day Iraq! Israel has never and does not yet possess the land that YHWH has promised them. But they will because God is not a man that He should lie.

Genesis 17:8 (NKJV)

8       Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

Contrary to what the Muslims believe YHWH was very clear through whom the promise would be fulfilled.

Genesis 17:19-21 (NKJV)

19       Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

20       And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

21       But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.”

Jacob is eventually born into Abraham’s progeny and this is what YHWH tells him.

Genesis 28:13-14 (NKJV)

13       And behold, [YHWH] stood above it and said: “I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.

14       Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

And

Genesis 35:12 (NKJV)

12       The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.”

There is so much that could be explored, but the truth is the Palestinians have absolutely no claim to the land. The idea of a two-state solution in Israel is in direct and violent opposition to YHWH’s very clearly and repeatedly stated will.

There are mountains more information we could sift through, both Biblical and historical to prove beyond any doubt that Hamas, Hezbollah, and any other Palestinian claiming they have a right to the land and not Israel is misguided at best and a vicious lie at worst.

YHWH will always watch over His word to perform it, regardless of how you and I might feel about it. May we never be found siding with YHWH’s enemies in any geo-political issue. I hope you will join me in praying for the peace of Israel and that the light of YHWH’s truth will capture the hearts and minds of individuals on both sides of this horrible conflict.

YHWH is Worthy of all our Praise!
