334 – Psalm 21 – Enemies

We have six verses left to consider in Psalm twenty-one. In verses one through seven King David relates how YHWH has blessed him. He describes specifically how YHWH has answered his prayers. These few verses are an inside look into the relationship between YHWH and King David, then verse eight takes an interesting turn. David is no longer describing his relationship with YHWH—the focus of his narrative changes to how YHWH will deal with His enemies.

Psalm 21:8 (NKJV)

           8       Your hand will find all Your enemies;

    Your right hand will find those who hate You.

There’s quite a bit of information to unpack in this one verse. First, it might be interesting to point out that the Hebrew poetic form employed is synthetic, meaning the first half of the verse gives us some information, and the second half gives us some additional detail. In the first half, it is YHWH’s “hand” that will find all His enemies, and the second half tells us it’s not just His hand but more specifically His “right hand”. In the Bible, there are times when a reference to the “right hand” is literal and other times when it is metaphorical. The right hand was the dominant hand of most people. When it was being used metaphorically if you were said to be at someone’s right hand it was a place of favor and protection. Depending on the context, the right hand could be describing strength as it is here in Psalm twenty-one.

What does it mean that His right hand will find all his enemies? His right hand is the sword hand or in this case, the hand that draws back the bowstring (verse 12). Verse eight very clearly communicates that YHWH will take up arms against His enemies – all His enemies. Besides clarifying for us which of YHWH’s hands He will use, the second half of the sentence tells us the one characteristic all YHWH’s enemies have in common, they hate YHWH!

Psalm 21:9-11 (NKJV)

           9       You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger;

    The [YHWH] shall swallow them up in His wrath,

    And the fire shall devour them.

           10       Their offspring You shall destroy from the earth,

    And their descendants from among the sons of men.

           11       For they intended evil against You;

    They devised a plot which they are not able to perform.

According to verses nine and ten God is coming down hard on His enemies. The use of phrases like “swallow them up in His wrath” and “destroy from the earth” tell us plainly YHWH’s judgment is all-encompassing and not just some disciplinary action. If there was any doubt of the severity of this destruction verse ten removes all doubt, “Their offspring you shall destroy from the earth”!

Why is YHWH God so harsh against His enemies? Well frankly, because they started it! Look at the first word in verse eleven. The word “for” here clearly means “because”. They will be destroyed because they, “intended evil against You [YHWH]”. The brazen stupidity of man never ceases to amaze me. Who in their right mind would pick a fight with YHWH?? Don’t they know, can’t they read the second half of verse eleven, “they devised a plot which they are not able to perform”?

Isaiah 45:23 (NKJV)

           23       I [YHWH] have sworn by Myself;

    The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness,

    And shall not return,

    That to Me every knee shall bow,

    Every tongue shall take an oath.

Romans 14:11 – 12 (NKJV)

           11       For it is written:

    “As I live, says the LORD [YHWH],

    Every knee shall bow to Me,

    And every tongue shall confess to God.”

           12       So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

There are other supporting verses we could discuss but these two references, one in the Old Testament, and one in the New proclaim unequivocally that all believers and unbelievers alike will bow their knees and their tongues will confess to God. Remember, “will confess to God” means will say the same thing God says.

YHWH is Holy, righteous, and true. He will eventually pour out His wrath on all His enemies, without exception whether we like it or not. If you don’t know YHWH you are His enemy. You may not think you are but the sad truth is the one who refuses to believe devises plots which they are to see to fruition. But there is hope!

John 3:16-18 (NKJV)

           16       For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

            17       For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

           18       “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Only God can condemn you, and only God can forgive you.
