341 – Psalm 24 – Part 1

The title of Psalm twenty-four is simply, “A Psalm of David”. All that tells us is who authored it. Unlike other Psalms, David has written it doesn’t seem a specific event occasioned this one. He wasn’t running from Saul and wasn’t in a current conflict threatening his life. Makes me kind of wonder if David was simply spending time in worship and bubbling up from the bottom of his heart this Hebrew song appeared on his lips. We will never know for sure.

In this ten-verse Psalm the name YHWH (the LORD) appears six times. This is important because David is not talking about God in general terms. David is talking about the one and only God with whom he has a personal relationship. This is the only living God and not only is He living but He is the very source of all life.

I’m sure there are better ways to outline or identify divisions in this beautiful little Psalm, but I see three natural divisions, verses one through two, Three through six, and seven through ten. We won’t make it past the first division this time.

In the first two verses, David affirms the truth proclaimed in the first two chapters of Genesis, namely that the earth and all its “fullness” belong to YHWH! Let’s take a look at exactly how the author puts it.

Psalm 24:1-2 (LEB)

1       The earth is Yahweh’s, with its fullness,

the world and those who live in it

2       because he has founded it on the seas,

and has established it on the rivers.

There is a truth here that would be so easy to read right over and ignore. I’ve bolded the words so we don’t miss them. How else might we phrase verse one? YHWH owns the earth and everything on it. Specifically, YHWH owns every man, woman, and child on the earth believer and unbeliever alike. You and I are not our own, we are owned by YHWH. Why? Because He created us. You and I may bristle at this truth, but the unbeliever kicks and screams at this. They don’t want to be owned by God, they want distance from Him with no accountability to Him. But it doesn’t matter, YHWH still owns them whether they like it or not!

Not only does YHWH own us because He created us, but He owns us because He redeemed us.

Psalm 107:2-4 (LEB)

2       Let the redeemed of Yahweh declare it,

those whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy

3       and gathered from the lands,

from east and from west, from north and from south.

4       They wandered in the wilderness, in a desert.

We need to take care to never take the scriptures out of context and force them to mean what they don’t. Let’s be clear, the redeemed of YHWH in the above verses are talking about those people that YHWH physically rescued from a physical enemy, but let me ask you a question. Are you “the redeemed of YHWH”? Did Jesus the anointed purchase you with His blood? You could almost say that for the believer we are twice owned by YHWH. Once because He created us, and twice because He purchased us with His blood.

I think the fact that we are owned by God too easily slips into the background (way back) of our thoughts. I think that many of the stresses of life we experience are because we don’t defer to our owner when we should. We still try to do everything ourselves. We should take our cues from King David way more often than we do. Trust YHWH! YHWH is good. David knew it and relied upon YHWH’s goodness.
